Geologic Time Line Reflection
One major event in Earth's history that we learned about during the process of the geologic timeline was the Cambrian Explosion. About 541 million years ago, there was a sudden increase in diversity of many animal phyla, called the Cambrian Explosion. It is regarded as one of the most important evolutionary events in all of Earth's history. Another major event that we learned about was the colonization of land by plants and animals. This occurred during the Ordovician period, about 488 million years ago. I find this very interesting, because we eventually evolved into humans from one of these creatures. Another major event was the formation of Earth in the Hadean period, about 4.6 billion years ago. This event is intriguing to me because it is incredible to think that our Earth evolved into what it is now, all from a lifeless hot ball of fire.
The scale of Earth's history is mind blowing. The one fact that surprised me the most, was the amount of time that humans have been on Earth. Humans have been on Earth for a minuscule amount of time, barely a blink in the scale of time. It is also quite interesting how the Precambrian Era is about 88% of Earth's history, however much more occurs in the other 12%. I was expecting a lot of major events to happen in the Precambrian Era, however there were only a few, while the other eras had many more major events.
It is remarkable how we have caused so much damage to our Earth in such a tiny amount of time. We are cutting down all our forests, polluting all of our air, and completely trashing our planet. We are exhausting all of our natural resources at an unsustainable rate, meaning we cannot how keep living the way we currently are, otherwise our planet will become a wasteland. We have huge mountains of trash. This is very sad to see, considering we are basically a blink
in the scale of Earth's time.
A question that I have is, how can we get everyone to be more environmentally conscious before they realize it is too late? Also, will there ever be another species on Earth to match the intelligence of us humans?
